Jason Colacino

The Dance World mourns the loss of a multi-faceted Dance Superstar

Gerry Zonca - Director of the USA Swing Dance Network
August 10, 2009

Jason Colacino was REMARKABLE.  Personally, I think he was the most talented dancer-athlete-artist the West Coast Swing community has ever produced.  He simply did things that no one else could do.  His spins were incomparable; his split drops were unmatchable; his choreographic stylings were unique; his artistry was magical.  He was a very rare talent.

Jason started his dance career in Country line dancing when he was just a teenager.  Less than a decade later, he mastered West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, Country, Salsa, Argentine Tango, Jazz, Ballet, and Ballroom dancing.  Among the many dance Championships he earned were a US Open Swing title and three World Cabaret titles.  There were many more.

Success and excellence brought widespread demand for his skills, which allowed him to teach, choreograph, compete, perform, and judge all around the world. Jason fully utilized his extensive dance training, borrowing technique from other dance genres and infusing it into all his dancing to create a style of choreography all his own.

Best known for his dynamic West Coast Swing competition performances with longtime partner, Katie Boyle, Jason was able to be powerful and graceful, intricate and smooth, fast and elegant - all at the same time.  Jason Colacino was immensely talented and truly unique.  He was not just a great Dancer.  He was an Artist.

In addition to an illustrious career of competitive dancing, Jason's dance resume features dance roles in several major stage productions - including "Swing!", "Swango - the Fusion", Evita", "Tango Dreams", and "A Broadway Tribute". He is considered by his peers to be one of the most gifted dancers ever to grace the hardwood.

Jason Colacino was a gentle soul who was loved and respected by all those who knew him, worked with him and were taught by him.  His talent, personality and creativity will be missed and long remembered.  The USA Swing Net salutes this marvelous dancer.

SPECIAL TRIBUTES

"Jason was a uniquely gifted artist and master of many varied dance styles.  As a performer he was elegant, graceful, dignified, and composed - never flashy or common in his choices - and the MOST sensual and athletic Swing dancer I've ever seen.  As a teacher, he was admired for his subtlety, generosity and humility.  He is irreplaceable and has left us a legacy of memories.  We'll miss him terribly."
Ms. Teddy Kern, Director of Dance Manhattan Studio - New York City

"Jason was by far one of the sexiest men in the WCS community. His style and his focus on his partner made every girl in the building want to be Katie or Gina.  He always hungered to learn another dance and he was phenomenal at every dance he attacked.  We will always remember him making us laugh!  We love you Jason and will carry your talented name with us!"
Brent & Kellese Key - US OPEN CHAMPIONS

"I’m saddened from yet another great loss to the dance community and a huge loss of a friend. Jason, you made such a impact on so many people who watched you perform and spent time with you. I feel privileged to have work with you on routines and danced with you at so many events."
Barry Jones - US OPEN Champion

"This is a huge loss to many people.  Jason will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, his dance family and his amazing friend KTB."
Ronnie Debenedetta - US OPEN Champion
